Ben Fenton is a resident artist at 'The School' Creative Centre in Rye, East Sussex. his life long fascination with portraiture, figurative painting and the human form in all media has been equalled by the stark and bleakly beautiful landscape of his native Romney Marsh since returning from london in 2008. His home town of Dungeness, a shingle peninsula jutting in to the Channel on the south east coast of Kent and his new home of Rye, lying on the edge of the marshes, along with the coastline in between, and all its stories of ghosts, ghouls, wrecks and watery graves inspire his new paintings, installations and photography. His portraiture tries to combine elements of this along with glimpses, snapshots and essences of the characters that inhabit 'the 5th continent'. "the world, according to the best geographers, is divided into europe, asia, africa, america and Romney Marsh." - the ingoldsby legends, 1840.
