Ford Madox Ford (1873-1939) was an English novelist, poet, and editor who is best known for his work as the editor of the influential literary magazine “The English Review” and for his novel “The Good Soldier.”
In the early 1900s, Ford lived in the historic town of Winchelsea in East Sussex, where he wrote and published much of his early literary work. It was during this time that he first became involved in the literary and artistic circles of London, which would come to influence his work for many years to come.
While living in Winchelsea, Ford became friends with a number of other writers and artists who were living in the area at the time, including the poet Edward Thomas and the novelist H.G. Wells. He also wrote several of his own novels and poetry collections, including “The Inheritors” and “The Cinque Ports,” which are both set in and around Winchelsea.
Today, Ford’s connection to Winchelsea is commemorated with a plaque above the door of the house where he lived, which is located in the heart of the town.
