John Christopher (1922-2012), a pseudonym for Samuel Youd, was an English science fiction author who was born in Lancashire and spent much of his life in the south of England. In the 1960s, he moved to the historic town of Rye in East Sussex, where he lived for many years and wrote some of his most famous works.

Christopher was particularly known for his dystopian novels, which explore themes of social collapse, environmental disaster, and the consequences of technology. His best-known works include “The Death of Grass” (1956), “The World in Winter” (1962), and the “Tripods” trilogy (1967-68).

Christopher passed away in 2012, but his legacy as a pioneering science fiction author and a member of the Rye community lives on.
